For iPods, docking stations are literally ubiquitous, but for industrial software it is a new way to instantly link CAD systems to the cost-and-pricing calculation software. Schmale-Kalkulations-Systeme GmbH of Bischoffen in Germany has intruduced such a system. It easily allows to calculate and determining manufacturing cost, unit prices and to immediately generate quotes of tools and moulds. Data are just transferred from the CAD system and instantly processed to deliver either prices for a quote, or cost. Lothar Schmale, owner: "The finer the CAD data are cut, the easier and better cost and prices can instantly be calculated." Thanks to the smart relational database design, Schmale could strengthen is number one position in this marked world wide, despite the global economical downturn.
In 2009, turnover was roughly equivalent to that of 2008. Two recent major orders helped strengthening the position as 1,050 new licenses have been obtained by one US car company and one european car and truck manufacturer. "We could expand our global reach as both customers now run our system worldwide", said Schmale.

Schmale Werkzeug- und Formtechnik GmbH was founded by Lothar Schmale and his wife Helmtraud in 1997 in Bischoffen, Germany. Before, he worked for more than 20 years in a management position of a medium sized tool and mould construction/manufacturing company. During the first years of their own business, they worked as sales agents for companies in the fields of mould construction, farmed-out production, plant engineering, milling machines as well as coated sheet metal parts and components. Besides, he advised firms in the automotive industry in process optimization and tool design. One day, an OEM suggested to him why not develop and sell a software for calculating cost for tools and moulds? So, he took the opportunity and started right away. Now, the core of the Schmale software is a relational database, which calculates unit costs and prices. Data exchange can be carried out with most CAD-data formats and via XML-format. Also, it offers a cost-recalculation option for jobs having been carried out. So, it allows a constant pricing optimisation over the time the application is used. Thus, cost transparency and accuracy over the course of time increases. According to Schmale, presently 276 companies in 29 countries are running 7,050 licensed software packages.
