Jenoptik Lasers & Material Processing division at Photonics West 2010

Press release from: JENOPTIK I Lasers & Material Processing
JenLas® disk IR50 for Photovoltaic Industry
JenLas® disk IR50 for Photovoltaic Industry
(openPR) - Presentation of innovations in diode lasers and laser systems

The Lasers & Material Processing division of Jenoptik will be from January 26-28, 2010 at the trade fair Photonics West in San Francisco, USA, at booth 1422. In addition to the proven standard products, innovations and further developments in semiconductor materials as well as diode and disk lasers will be presented.

Entire value chain of diode lasers

The Diode Lasers business unit will present the entire technology chain of high-power diode lasers.
These OEM components range from customized epitaxial layer structures, high quality laser bars and single emitters, reliable diode laser packages to vertical and horizontal stacks with output powers up to the kW range as well as high-brightness fiber-coupled diode laser modules—all for use in various industrial, medical and scientific applications.

Low cost laser bars for 808 nm applications

Additionally, aside from the previously available standard range of bars and single emitters, the Diode Lasers business unit now also offers a cost-effective alternative to laser bars for medical applications such as hair removal for the first time in the United States.

The new laser bar has an optical output power of 20 watts and a resonator length of 0.6 mm. The customer does not only profit from an attractive price and optimized lifetime for specific usage, but also from the high level of quality for which the products of the Jenoptik brand are renowned. In addition to the characteristics optimized for medical applications, the bars are also suitable for pump applications for solid-state lasers with low power.

The new laser bar JDL-BAB-30-19-808-TE-20-0.6 has already been introduced in Germany in June 2009 at the trade fair LASER World of Photonics and is now manufactured in series production.
With this new product, Jenoptik meets the needs of its customers for high quality at a low price.

Diode lasers with high brilliance

In addition, the Diode Lasers business unit will showcase its high-brightness fiber-coupled diode laser modules with 105 µm fiber core diameter and a numerical aperture of 0.15. They are based on the coupling of several single emitters and are characterized by a high level of robustness and the compact design of only 100 mm x 60 mm x 25 mm. Due to the passive cooling of the diode laser modules through to the base plate, the handling of the modules is very easy. Another benefit is an integrated filter that protects against back reflection from the fiber laser beam.

The main areas of application of the high-brightness modules are optical pumping of fiber lasers and direct material processing.

New quality in solar cell processing

The Laser Systems Business Unit will showcase its JenLas® disk IR50 for solar cell processing.
The laser combines perfect beam quality in the infrared wavelength range at 1030 nm with a flexible tunable pulse length.
Consequently, the 45-watt system is ideal for the laser drilling of silicon wafers, which then allow the efficient production of back-contact solar cells. The electrical efficiency of the cells can be increased through the use of MWT or EWT (Metal Wrap Through und Emitter Wrap Through) technology. In order to increase the active surface area of the cells, in the case of both technologies the contacts are laid from the front to the rear side of the cell. The contact finger that are currently used as standard and covers parts of the active surface area can therefore be dispensed.

The company will also present a range of diode lasers, fiber lasers and diode-pumped-solid-state lasers for OEM and R&D customers for different applications.
Target applications in material processing are marking, deep engraving, ablating, structuring, cutting and drilling for electronics, semiconductor, automotive, photovoltaics and packaging markets. Life science lasers for ophthalmology and dermatology and lasers for show & entertainment will be exposed too.

Information about the innovations and the entire standard product range of the Diode Lasers and Laser Systems business units of Jenoptik's Lasers & Material Processing division are available during the trade fair Photonics West at the Jenoptik booth 1422 in the South Hall of Moscone Center.

Further details to the new innovations at high-power diode lasers will be revealed during two presentations (paper numbers: 7583-29 and 7583-8) at the Photonics West Conference LASE.

About the Jenoptik Lasers & Material Processing division

Jenoptik’s Lasers & Material Processing division makes it one of the leading providers of laser technology—from component through to complete system. The increased productivity from which our customers benefit is the key factor in the use of Jenoptik laser technology.

In the area of laser technology, the division has specialized in high-quality semiconductor materials and reliable diode lasers as well as innovative solid-state lasers such as for example disk and fiber lasers. In the area of high-power diode lasers Jenoptik is acknowledged worldwide as a leader in quality.

Lasers are developed as components and system for our customers’ applications and integrated into material processing systems through the development in close collaboration with the customer as well as optimization and automation of the processes. These systems enable our customers to work with plastics, metals, glass, ceramics, semiconductor materials and solar cells, both in thin film as well as wafer technology, with maximum efficiency, precision and safety. As such, Jenoptik has control over the entire added value chain for laser material processing in the form of development, manufacture and sales and is a reliable global partner for the customer.

The division comprises the two diode laser companies JENOPTIK Diode Lab GmbH and JENOPTIK Laserdiode GmbH, the Laser Systems business unit of JENOPTIK Laser, Optik, Systeme GmbH as well as INNOVAVENT GmbH and JENOPTIK Automatisierungstechnik GmbH.
