Dear Mr President of the United States of America,
Last week the U.S. congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. This week you are supposed to sign it, in order to prohibit banks and credit card companies from processing money from and to gaming companies. Let it be understood that we are only talking about online betting companies and casinos.
The broad infrastructure of the casinos in Las Vegas and elsewhere will of course not be touched. Protectionism? Massive lobbying of the offline gaming industry? It leaves a bad impression.
The human being has a natural tendency for gaming, winning and thrills. Therefore, US citizens will continue to gamble online – however, they will be forced into illegality, where your citizens are easily made victims of dubious firms who do not comply with the high standards of the industry and only want to make quick money.
Many pleasant activities have consequences when practiced beyond a reasonable scope. The only solution for this can be regulation and education. Think of the prohibition in the United States of the 1920’s. Regulate the online gaming market in your country. Educate your people. Give the user a chance to become an informed and responsible citizen who knows what he/she is doing and is able to act autonomously.
Dear Mr. President, we understand and appreciate your relentless efforts to make this world a better place. But to add online gaming companies to your axis of evil – with all due respect, is a ludicrous idea.
