New Whitepaper Discusses How to Drive Innovation in IT Sourcing

Munich, October 29, 2009 – What opportunities and challenges should you expect when outsourcing IT services? And what key role will IT play in organizations in the future? In spite of tight budgets, the IT department needs to master ever more complex tasks. For CIOs and IT managers, it is great consolation that IT is constantly gaining importance with respect to the organization’s success. However, there is a danger of losing focus on the essentials while having to deliver so many tasks simultaneously.

Build or Buy? The Pros and Cons

The requirements for IT departments are enormous. Besides reliable and efficient provisioning and maintenance of basic infrastructure and the continuous management and development of applications, proximity to the core business and a deeper understanding of organizations’ core processes are increasingly becoming key indicators of success.

This is a lot to handle at once, which inevitably raises the question which IT services can be provided by external resources to enable greater efficiency and reliability? “Basic services around the fundamental IT environment are especially well suited for externalization,” says Stephan Kaiser, Director at PAC and author of the white paper. These services include the core areas of central and de-centralized IT infrastructure, for instance data center operation or desktop management, as well as related maintenance services.

IT departments are increasingly evaluated by how they support innovation across the organization. The reliable provision of IT, or “keeping the lights on” is frequently taken for granted.

“In the past two years, a number of new offerings with high flexibility for user organizations has been created,” continues Stephan Kaiser. Flexible contracts within the framework of IT outsourcing or managed services offer a high degree of cost transparency and efficiency. Ideally, the cost savings can then be invested in innovative IT topics.

Fujitsu has developed four different service components within their newly defined Dynamic Infrastructures services offering (see figure).

“Fujitsu positions itself as a complete provider of dynamic IT infrastructures, offering an appropriate IT infrastructure service for each sourcing strategy,” adds Stephan Kaiser. Both Managed Services and Infrastructure as a Service components (see figure) reflect efficient IT infrastructure services concepts with high flexibility. But what remains important is that an IT department’s individual degree of maturity decisively influences the chosen sourcing mix.

The goal of the white paper is to use Fujitsu’s example to illustrate the advantages and opportunities of relieving the IT organization from pure IT operation services in the long term and to create free space for business-oriented and IT-supported innovation with a clear contribution to added value.
